Tips & FAQ’s on how to get freelance work done

You may be wondering how all this freelance stuff works. How do you find someone? What’s the best use of freelance talent?  How can you be sure you’re investing in a cost-effective relationship?
Here are some tips and questions to help you get started:

HOW DO I FIND GOOD FREELANCE HELP?

With the incredible array of talent available on the Internet, it may be a challenge trying to narrow your options to the right professional or Service Company for you. So don’t start with “them.” Start with you. Before beginning your search, determine your needs. Here are some questions to ask yourself:

• What services do I need? Consider print ads, press releases, technical or white papers, or scripts or speeches.

• How much industry experience does a potential writer need?

• Am I looking for an extra staff hand (cheaper) or a professional consultant (more expensive, but often well worthwhile)?

• Do I need to meet face-to-face, or can I conduct business by phone or email?

When you know what you need, you can narrow your search with specific keywords—things to type in a search box on your search engine. Try three or four different searches and make a list of prospective help. Then check their references. The nice thing about using a freelancer is that you can do a small “trial project” to get started, saving you both time and money.

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE?

Freelance copywriters have various rates for their work, and can charge either by project or by the hour. If they charge you an incredibly low rate or an extremely high one, you can be sure you can do better. As of today, an hourly rate between $55 and $125 is considered acceptable.

As for me, I will work with you. I do have a standard hourly rate and will offer discounts for long-term retainer contracts, but I can also work with you on a per project basis. I generally work on standard published rates for these projects, so please contact me directly for a price sheet.

WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE THE COPY YOU PRODUCE?

Part of my standard project preparation is that some work will need a polish or two in a re-write phase. I offer up to two of these exercises as part of a per project fee. Line editing, which is checking for punctuation, spelling and grammatical errors is all a part of the service I include in any writing I do for you.

WHAT IF THE AD YOU WRITE DOESN’T INCREASE MY SALES?

Unfortunately, there are no guarantees in advertising beyond that the results are not very predictable. What I can do is make sure you have clean, comprehensive copy that includes a call to action and a way to achieve the action requested.  I’d also recommend that your advertising is only part of your messaging.  Today an active hand in social media management will bring more leads, more cost-effectively than in the past.  Call me and we can talk about an organized plan for you.

WHY DO YOU TALK A LOT ABOUT ORGANIZATION?—I THOUGHT YOU JUST WRITE COPY.

Organization is the key to successful marketing. I could take each project on your task list and write new copy for you every time a need arose, but together we can make an organized approach to copy work for your best interest. No reinventing the wheel, if we have a press release template that works to cut time on your project. If you have the information for a white paper in the content of a case study, you can get the job done more thoroughly and faster. If you have a library of messages, then ads and trade show content become a snap, instead of a long list of to-do items. WHAT IF I WRITE THE COPY AND YOU JUST BRUSH IT UP A BIT? IS THAT EXPENSIVE OR TIME CONSUMING?

I can offer you either content editing services or line editing services. The former is a chance for you to have your work reviewed with suggested copy changes and the latter is a more detailed look at your work that includes grammar, punctuation and spell-checking. I charge a standard hourly rate for such work and turn it around within a business week.
